Welding Technologies

This two-year program trains students in SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW-GS, CAC, blueprint reading and shop safety. Students are taught the same skills that are offered at regional post secondary institutions. In related classroom study, students learn the scientific theories and principles of welding. Additional curriculum topics cover fabrication, basic metallurgy, blueprint reading, machine safety and troubleshooting. Plus employability skills and job search preparedness. Hands on training is emphasised through laboratory practice, community service projects, job shadowing and internships. Opportunities for trained welders include millwright welder, fabrication welder, tack welder, pipe welder, welding inspector, travel welding and welding equipment tender. Students will have the opportunity to job shadow and intern within the manufacturing industry. They will become AWS certified in at least 2 processes and be 10-hour OSHA certified.

Junior Year

Students will use the Gas Metal Arc Welding process (GMAW) to safely join various types of metal and joints in all positions, including overhead. They will cut metals using oxy-fuel processes and mechanical shears. They will select the appropriate type of electrode wire and shielding gas, and they will adjust welding equipment based on the physical characteristics and metal properties. Students will apply quality control factors to evaluate weld quality.

As in GMAW, students will learn Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). to safely join various types of metal. They will select the appropriate type of electrode and adjust welding equipment based on the physical characteristics and properties of the metal. Students will apply quality control factors to evaluate the quality of welds.

Senior Year

Applying what they learned in the Junior curriculum, students will using, Flux Cored Arc Welding process (FCAW). They will perform multiple types of welds and joints in all positions up to and including overhead. They will select the appropriate type of cored electrode wire and adjust welding equipment based on the physical characteristics and properties of the metal. Students will apply quality control factors to evaluate the quality of welds.

Students will use the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding process (GTAW) to safely join various types of metal. They will perform multiple types of welds and joints in all positions, up to and including overhead. They will select the appropriate type of filler metal and shielding gas. They will be able to adjust welding equipment based on the physical characteristics and properties of the metal. Students will apply quality control factors to evaluate weld quality.

Final Semester Requirements
In the Spring semester of Senior year students will obtain a paid internship that could lead to full time employment.

Additional training can be pursued through Union education and training, technical schools and colleges.
