Automative Technology

This is a hands-on live learning environment, and experience is gained by performing many aspects of customer service. Students will be taught to use a Hunter Hawkeye Elite alignment machine, Hunter Road Force wheel balancer and gain experience with tire pressure monitoring systems. Students will remove and replace various steering and suspension components, brakes and exhaust systems and will use MIG welding and Oxy fuel torches. Students will use a variety of advanced computerized scan tools from Autel and SnapOn to view diagnostic codes, analyze live data, and complete tasks with bidirectional control. Students will also be introduced to the maintenance and repair of small engines and various aspects of mechanical maintenance.

Junior Year

Students will learn the basics of automotive braking, steering and suspension systems. Students will learn hands-on skills while working in a live shop environment with real customers and real problems. Students will also learn and perform the basics of vehicle inspection and routine maintenance. Students are required to work in a team environment in the lab to complete tasks and repairs. Students will learn to use automotive technical resources like Alldata and ShopKey Pro to find specifications and procedures for repairs. Students will complete all forms of customer service from communication with customers to writing the repair orders.

Senior Year

Students will continue with customer service in increasing complexity and develop a diagnostic mindset. Diagnostic tools from Autel and SnapOn will be used to scan for codes, view live data, provide bidirectional control and perform system resets. A large portion of time will be dedicated to building basic electrical skills. Skills such as understanding basic electrical terminology, using multimeters, understanding basic circuit design, reading and following wiring diagrams. Students will also spend time learning to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical problems. Automotive engine theory is also taught analyzing the four stroke process along with the mechanical and support systems needed for proper engine performance.

Two job shadowing experiences required.
Internship opportunity available second semester.
